about

“The beauty of Dire Dire Docks lies in its simplicity. We didn’t realize that until after we committed to using pipe organ, cello, vibraphone, and a 24 voice choir. We played around with a few ideas to expand on the original melody and harmony before ultimately deciding that if we wanted to tell a story about how ‘dire’ these docks really are, then we should experiment with the parallel minor. The first half of Dire Dire Docks is meant to sound day-dreamy and nostalgic, but then it makes a dark turn with a lonely sea captain introducing the minor mode. We try our best to stay away from stereotypical choral ‘ooh's and ahhs’ so we looked for nautical themed poetry in the public domain, and stumbled across American poet William Winter's amazing story of ‘On the Verge’. The low percussion under the choral narratives is meant to convey a tribal ceremony one might hear when approaching an unknown island. We threw in some elements of trip-hop for transitional material. Tim wrote a beautiful story with Dire Dire Docks and we’re so happy to share it!”

lyrics

My course is set, my hour is known
I must not bide for wind or wave, though tempest rave
And I must front the dark alone
